thank goodness for great friends and re-connecting. i'd forgotten how amazing, genuine, and caring the people i knew are. it's so damn refreshing.

last night's dinner was Brandied-Peach Pork Chops served with some roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes (totally thought of you my sweet potato queen ashley) and some green beans with mushrooms, tomato, garlic, and basil. phenomenal, it was one of the best sauces i have ever made/tasted i think. it's a simple, fast, and fun recipe...congrats to me for my first flambe, and the kitchen is still standing!

night before was another definite keeper, Curried Parsnip Soup. hummanuh hummanuh. the flavours were perfect, you could still taste the sweet parsnips because the curry wasn't too overpowering. it was the perfect compliment. if you want the recipe, request it and i'll type 'er up for ya. dessert was a nummy little Maple-Cranberry Pudding.

also made these earlier this week, Chocolate Caramel Pecan bars. veeeerry good, rich but not sickly. i kinda goofed and didn't cook the caramel long enough though so they were a little runny...but who cares. also, if i made them again, i may cut the crust down by half or at least a fourth. crusts are usually one of my fave aspects of bar cookies, but there was just a wee bit too much on these. or maybe i would make the same amount and just eat what i didn't put in the pan :)

oh and so Cloverfield? wow, what a shite movie. i can honestly say it was one of, if not the worst movie i have ever seen. i can appreciate good bad movies, but this wasn't even that. it is just a comlpete waste of time. ah! i could go on forever about how terrible it was, everything about it.

p.s. you need to be watching the cartoon Chowder on cartoon network. hamazing.

serves 3-4

2 tbsp butter
1 crushed garlic clove
1 onion chopped
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
4 parnips, peeled and sliced
2 tsp medium curry paste (i only had curry powder, and though the two are quite different i hear, it turned out just fine)
2 cups chicken stock
2 cups milk
4 tbsp sour cream
lemon juice
salt and ground black pepper

1. melt butter in large heavy pan until foaming. add garlic and onion, cooking over medium heat until softened and lightly golden. stir in cumin and coriander, cooking about another 2 minutes.

2. add pasnip slices and stir until coated with butter, then stir in curry paste/powder, followed by stock. cover, lower heat to simmer for 15 minutes or until parsnips are tender.

3. remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. process or blend soup until smooth.

4. return to pan and stir in milk, heat gently for about 3 minutes, then add half the sour cream and generous squeeze of lemon. season to taste with salt and pepper. serve topped with remaining sour cream.

note: i ended up adding probably double the amount of spices and a little bit more stock to get a smoother consistency. just depends on how much pasnip you end up with etcetera, etcetera! you know all this!

I've heard other friends say Cloverfield was great. I'm inclined to believe you as the commercials look dumb. Did you see There Will Be Blood? A lot of people loved that and I thought it was pretty boring.

hah, yeah...sad, i think it's one of those films that people will say is "awesome" just because their friends all think that way. i guess cuz it is supposed to be so "different", meaning only "cool" people get it and like it...but there is nothing different at all about it. it's just bad.

and no, i havent! but i have also heard good things about it, so i'm kinda intrigued and want to see what all the hype is about. yeah a story about oil mining does strike me as boring :) did you get to see "no country for old men?" that one blew me away, best movie that i had seen in a while.

oh! a new series just started on AMC called "breaking bad" that i want you to watch :) it stars bryan cranston (the dad from malcolm in the middle) and is awesome. premiere was yesterday, i'm sure you can find it online if you dont have cable.

and have you gotten into 10 items or less yet?? you can catch up at tbs' website, they have all the first season episodes available for streaming

p.s. i'm a little tipsy, so sorry for the oh-so-lengthy and maybe a wee bit incoherent response...

p.p.s. i do indeed love you miss jamie

Oh, yes! I definitely liked No Country for Old Men! It took me a couple days to sort through it in my mind, but I decided that it was totally good. Javier Bardem had better win an Oscar.

The very last scene of There Will Be Blood is really amazing and so intense. It just made me wish the rest of the movie was like that! And it made me wish that I was watching No Country again instead.

Man, I haven't watched any new tv in a while. Plus, I don't have cable! I will check out these shows online. I've been all about Veronica Mars lately. I wish I had watched more of it when it was actually on the air.

So my friend calls me a couple days back and asks me if i want to see a movie. We usually just hit the antique car shows around here, so this was different.
